Spreadsheets in the Age of AI

Deepanshu

Back in university, I never thought Excel could hold so much power in the business world. It felt dull — just rows, columns, and endless data entry. Moving things from paper to table seemed mechanical and repetitive.

I had no idea how wrong I was.

The Turning Point

When I started working in supply chain management, Excel became my most important tool. Purchase orders, cost analysis, inventory tracking, pricing models — everything ran through spreadsheets. I went from basic SUM formulas to building complex INDEX/MATCH lookups, VBA macros, and automated reporting systems.

Where AI Changes Everything

Today, AI tools are transforming how we work with data:

  • Natural language queries — Ask questions about your data in plain English
  • Automated pattern recognition — AI spots trends you might miss in thousands of rows
  • Smart formula suggestions — Tools like Copilot write complex formulas for you
  • Data cleaning at scale — What used to take hours now takes minutes

But Excel Isn't Going Anywhere

Here's what many people get wrong: AI isn't replacing spreadsheets. It's supercharging them. The people who understand spreadsheet logic deeply are the ones who can leverage AI most effectively. You still need to know what a VLOOKUP does to tell an AI what you need.

My Advice

If you're early in your career, invest time in mastering Excel properly. Learn formulas, pivot tables, and basic VBA. Then layer AI tools on top. That combination — deep spreadsheet fluency + AI leverage — is incredibly powerful in any business role.

The spreadsheet isn't dead. It's evolving. And so should you.
